Sneath's Mill 2000's
The Origins of the Sneath’s Mill Trust
In November 2007 the Long Sutton & District Civic Society invited several members to set up a separate charity to try to endeavour to conserve Sneath’s Mill. The Sneath’s Mill Trust Ltd, a company limited by guarantee, was formed and shortly afterwards registered as a charity with the Charities Commission.
In March 2008 the Trust acquired the freehold ownership of the mill together with about one third of an acre and two out-buildings. The vendor did not charge for the site, but the Trust paid for his conveyance costs. This money was donated to the Trust by the Long Sutton & District Civic Society.
The Way Forward
Having obtained ownership of the mill, the Trust held several meetings with English Heritage, Lincolnshire County Council, South Holland District Council and the Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire. It was agreed that the next stage was to commission an Options Appraisal and Condition Survey to investigate the future of the mill.
In 2008 the Trust appointed Anderson and Glenn, Conservation Architects, as lead professionals and raised the funds to carry out the surveys. By late 2008 it was apparent that the work could not be completed due to the dangerous condition of the building.
In early 2009 it was decided to carry out urgent works and repairs in order to make the mill weather-tight, secure and available to safely record remains of important early mill machinery. English Heritage invited the Trust to apply for a grant which would fund up to 80% of this work. By the end of 2009 Listed Building Consent had been obtained and funding raised.
In early 2010 the Trust obtained a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (pic below) to build this website and purchase various items that would help promote the Trust.
During 2010 the urgent works were put out to tender and Arthur Wood & Sons Ltd appointed as the main contractor (pic below).
As you can see from the image below, work commenced on Monday 15 November 2010.
